Halloween falls on Saturday this year, so I am hosting a group tomorrow night and I need exactly one movie. The catch: half the group hates gore, the other half wants actual scares, and a couple of people have seen all the obvious classics already. Do I go with a classic everyone can quote along to, or gamble on something newer that nobody has seen? One pick only, and it has to work for people who scare easily.

    Ghostbusters, the 1984 original

Pick Ghostbusters, the 1984 original. Zero gore, jokes that land for every age in the room, and it is genuinely spooky enough in the library ghost scene to satisfy the scare crowd without sending anyone out of the room. It is also the one classic in this debate that people quote without having to explain the plot first.
