Star Wars: Starfighter is set for May 28, 2027, with Ryan Gosling playing a new pilot named Kade Auberon in a story set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Now there is a report that Eva Mendes is joining the cast, which would be her return to movies after more than a decade away. I like Gosling and I like that it is a new character instead of more Skywalker homework, but Disney has burned me before. Is a standalone Star Wars movie with a fresh cast something you are actually excited for, or does the franchise need to earn that excitement back first?

    Standalone is the whole point

The strongest case for Starfighter is that Kade Auberon has no homework attached. It is set five years after Rise of Skywalker with a new cast, so a new viewer can walk in cold, which you cannot say about most Star Wars right now. Levy has said the characters are outsiders from the wrong side of the galaxy, and that grounded angle is exactly what the franchise has been missing. If the first trailer sells the character instead of the lore, I am in.
