Halloween falls on Saturday this year and I have left the costume to the last minute again. Google Frightgeist says the trendiest looks this year are a witch for adults, Spider-Man for kids, and KPop Demon Hunters outfits, but I do not want to pay full price for a bagged costume I will wear once. What is a last-minute costume you can pull together from things already at home, or one thrift-store trip, that still reads clearly at a party? Bonus points if it survives a whole night out.

Black dress from the thrift rack, a five-dollar hat, and eyeliner you already own. That is the whole costume and it reads instantly across a room, unlike some clever concept you have to explain to everyone. Skip the bagged costume aisle entirely - the thrift version looks better, costs less, and you can actually sit down in it all night.

Forget the bagged costume entirely. A black outfit you already own, white face paint from the drugstore, and dark eye makeup reads as a vampire or a witch from across the room, and it costs under ten dollars. The trick is committing to one clear character instead of half of three ideas. People remember a costume they can name in two seconds.
