Project Hail Mary is trending hard — Ryan Gosling, Lord and Miller, and a movie that wants you to cry about a rock. Book readers: is it faithful? Non-readers: opening weekend or wait?
Project Hail Mary is everywhere right now — Ryan Gosling as the stranded science teacher, Phil Lord and Chris Miller directing, and all this behind-the-scenes talk about the puppetry and Sandra Huller karaoke and making audiences cry about a rock. I have not read the book, and I am torn. Part of me wants to go opening weekend before spoilers are everywhere, and part of me wonders if the movie works better cold or if knowing the book makes it land harder. For people who read Andy Weir's book: does the movie look faithful to what made the book fun, or is it doing its own thing? And for non-readers, are you going opening weekend or waiting for reviews?

- Let opening weekend report back
I am waiting, and not because I doubt the movie. Opening weekend tickets, popcorn, parking — it adds up fast for a movie I can watch at home in a few months. The book readers I know are split anyway: some say the charm is the science puzzles, which survive any adaptation, and some say the charm is the narrator's voice, which a movie cannot fully copy. I will let the opening weekend crowd report back first.
