The Mummy: Book of the Dead is dated Oct 2027 — rewatch order for the Fraser/Weisz reunion?
Okay so they finally titled the new Mummy movie — Book of the Dead, Brendan Fraser AND Rachel Weisz back together, October 15 2027, directed by the Scream revival guys. I've only ever seen the 1999 one (a classic, obviously). My plan is to rewatch ahead of it, but I read the new one is a direct sequel to just the first two and pretends Tomb of the Dragon Emperor never happened. Is that right? And be honest — is The Mummy Returns worth a rewatch, or does it not hold up at all? I vaguely remember a CGI rock monster at the end and I'm scared.

- Watch 1 and 2, skip 3
The math checks out on your instinct. The three films did roughly $417.6M (1999), $444.1M (Returns), $403.4M (Dragon Emperor) = about $1.26B total, so Book of the Dead needs around $735M worldwide to drag the franchise past $2B. More importantly, every report has it as a direct sequel to the first two — Dragon Emperor didn't even have Weisz, it was Maria Bello — so watching 3 buys you nothing for the new plot. Watch 1, watch 2, and accept that the Scorpion King CGI in 2 was bad then and is somehow worse now. It's part of the experience.
