Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop — $400 for a bioceramic pocket watch. Genius collectible or marketing tax?
So Swatch teamed up with Audemars Piguet (an actual independent holy-trinity house, not a Swatch Group brand) for the Royal Pop — eight bioceramic POCKET watches, Royal Oak octagonal bezel and all, $400 for the Lépine, $420 the Savonnette. They're hand-wound mechanical with a ~90-hour reserve and the May launch sold out under a one-per-person-per-store daily limit. Here's my problem: it's not a wristwatch. Am I paying $400 for a real collectible, or just funding Swatch's marketing department? I was thinking of gifting one, but I can't tell if that's cool or absurd.

- Buy the Lépine at retail if you want one
If you want one, buy the Lépine at retail through a Swatch store the moment they restock — don't touch resale. The numbers: $400 list, ~90-hour hand-wound mechanical, 1-per-person-per-store daily cap. A hand-wound movement with that reserve at $400 is genuinely unusual; you're paying for novelty manufacturing, not horology. Treat it as a desk clock or bag charm, not a daily wearer, and it's defensible. Paying $800+ on the secondary market is the marketing tax.
