Essentials hoodies are breaking out again — is the quality real or is it just the logo?
Every fall this happens: Essentials hoodies are trending again, the Fear of God dupes are everywhere, and my teenager has added one to his birthday list. They're $90-110 retail and resale is worse. So I need a straight answer from people who actually own one: is the fleece genuinely different from a $25 Champion reverse weave, or am I paying $70 for a tonal logo? Has anyone worn both for a full season and compared pilling, cuffs, how they hold shape? And do they shrink? He's between sizes and I don't want to guess wrong.

- Champion, honestly
Champion. Honestly. I bought the Essentials because my kid asked, washed both twenty times. Same pilling. Same stretched-out cuffs. The only real difference is the price tag and the tiny logo your kid will outgrow caring about in six months. Put the $70 difference toward something else and get the Champion. Size up, wash cold, skip the dryer.
- The 400gsm fleece test
Worn both, measured both. Essentials uses ~400gsm heavyweight fleece; Champion Reverse Weave is ~350gsm. The checkable test: weigh a size M — Essentials comes in around 800g, Champion around 650g. The real gap isn't softness on day one, it's the shoulder seams and drawcord aglets — Champion's pills and frays first at the ribbed cuffs after ~20 washes. Essentials shrinks ~3% in warm wash, so size up if he's between. Verdict: you're paying ~$40 for heavier fleece and better finishing, and ~$50 for the logo. If the logo matters to a teenager, that's not nothing — just know the split.
