My dad's 67 and takes solo fishing trips to the Caribbean - is medical evacuation coverage actually worth it?
The news about that medical plane that went missing off Nantucket on its way back from Bermuda has me rattled. My dad goes down to the islands alone twice a year and his health insurance won't touch anything outside the US. I'm looking at Medjet versus just a travel insurance plan with a medical benefit, but I can't tell what's real coverage and what's marketing. Has anyone here actually had to use one of these, or is it just expensive peace of mind?
1 answer
- A medical evacuation membership
The one checkable difference that matters: travel insurance medevac only takes you to the nearest hospital they deem adequate. A membership like Medjet takes you to your home hospital. That distinction is printed in both policies - read the 'transport to' clause before you buy. Filing is also a phone call, not a claim form; insurance medevac usually needs the insurer's doctor to approve the move first. If your dad travels alone and wants to end up near family, the membership is the actual product. If 'nearest good hospital' is fine, the insurance add-on is cheaper.
