Asian Games 2026 in Japan — is it actually worth building a trip around?

Asian Games 2026 is trending and it is in Nagoya, Japan. I have always wanted to go to Japan and this feels like a good excuse. But is a multi-sport games trip actually fun for a regular tourist, or would I be fighting crowds for the worst seats the whole time? Anyone here built a trip around a big event like this?

Do not build the whole trip around the Games. That is the mistake everyone makes. Book 2-3 event days in Nagoya, then use a rail pass for Kyoto and Osaka in between — multi-sport events have dead gaps between the sports you actually care about, and that is where the trip gets fun. I did this for a different big event and the non-event days were the ones I still talk about.
