Walking Dead: Dead City season 4 isn't confirmed yet — worth catching up, or is the franchise done?

I just saw that producer Scott Gimple says a Dead City season 4 has "a good shot" but there's no official renewal, and fans are arguing about whether the whole Walking Dead universe is running on fumes. I've never watched any of it and the episode count looks massive. Is Dead City a good standalone starting point, or should I start somewhere else — or just skip the whole thing at this point?

Dead City season 1 as a standalone test

Dead City is the best low-commitment test — season 1 is only 6 episodes and it's built around Negan and Maggie in New York, so you don't need the main show's lore to follow it. If those six don't hook you, you'll know the franchise isn't for you without signing up for 177 episodes of the original.
