DIY or buy for a Halloween costume you'll wear exactly once?

Halloween is four weeks out and I'm going back and forth. I've sewn costumes before and it's fun, but I've also burned an entire weekend building something that got worn once and then lived in a bin. This year the party-store stuff looks cheap and the good ones look expensive. For people who've done both: when is DIY actually worth the time, and when is it smarter to buy (or thrift) and keep your weekend?

Thrift the base, build one accent

Full DIY costume for one night is a money pit of hours. Buy the base secondhand — jacket, pants, boots — and build exactly ONE accent piece: mask, prop, whatever reads from across the room. That's 2 hours of work instead of 20, costs about ten bucks, and it photographs better than a $60 polyester bag costume from Amazon.
