VMAs 2026 are Sunday — actually worth watching live this year or just catch the highlights?

I have not watched an awards show in years but this one keeps popping up everywhere. Snoop Dogg is hosting, Madonna is opening, Nirvana is getting the Vanguard, and there is a George Michael tribute. It airs Sunday Sept 27 at 7:30 ET on CBS/MTV. Is there a real reason to watch live, or is clips-the-next-morning the move?

I'll be the contrarian: clips. Award shows are 3 hours for about 20 minutes of moments, and every performance is on YouTube within the hour. The only reason to watch live is voting, and that closes Friday night anyway. If you care about the winners, the full list drops right after - you save 3 hours and still get everything in the group chat. The Nirvana Vanguard might be fun live, but I'll catch the 8-minute clip.
