Thanksgiving flights — is there any real data on booking now vs waiting?

Flying NYC to Chicago for Thanksgiving. Prices right now look steep — $420 round trip on the dates I need. The usual advice is ‘book 6-8 weeks out’ but that feels like folk wisdom. Has anyone tracked actual fare data for Thanksgiving specifically — do prices genuinely drop, or does waiting just mean paying more? I’ll be booking 2 seats if that matters.

Set up Google Flights price tracking with the date grid and watch for 7-10 days. The data for Thanksgiving specifically: it’s the one holiday where fares trend upward almost monotonically because everyone flies the same two days. If your dates are firm, the ‘wait for a drop’ advice mostly doesn’t apply here. Book when you see something within 10% of the cheapest tracked price.
