Halloween party playlist tonight - is Thriller still the only correct opener, or is it overplayed?
Hosting a Halloween party tonight and building the playlist. Spotify's October 2026 data has Thriller as the most-streamed Halloween song in the US again, with Ghostbusters and Monster Mash also in the top five. Part of me thinks you have to open with Thriller because everyone knows it, and part of me thinks every party has done that since forever and guests are bored of it by the second verse. For a crowd in their 20s and 30s, what actually works: open with the classic, or start with something newer and save Thriller for later?

- Thriller, then stop overthinking it
Open with Thriller and stop overthinking it. It is the one song every guest already knows, and the first two minutes set the tone for the whole night. The mistake is staying in classic mode after that - once Thriller ends, switch to stuff people actually dance to instead of DJing from memory. A playlist dies when the host picks songs only they like.
