Personal blogs are coming back and searches for how to start one jumped - best setup in 2026: Substack, Ghost, or plain WordPress?

I want a place that is mine, not an algorithm feed, and I do not want to spend a weekend on setup. Substack is free and has discovery built in, Ghost looks cleaner but costs monthly, WordPress is the most flexible but the most fiddly. For someone who just wants to write weekly, which one wins and why?

Start free on Substack and prove you will actually write weekly before paying for anything. Ghost is nice but a monthly bill for a blog with four posts is just a subscription you feel guilty about. Move later if you outgrow it, your archive exports fine.
