AirPods Max 2 are $429 right now — are they really worth 2.4x the AirPods Pro 3?
Ok so the AirPods Pro 3 are still $179 and I was already debating that, but now the AirPods Max 2 are $429 (down from $549) which deal trackers say is one of the lowest prices ever. That is more than double for over-ears. For people who have actually owned both: is the Max 2 upgrade mostly the nicer ANC and the premium build, or does it genuinely sound that much better for someone who just streams Spotify on the train? Trying to figure out if the $250 difference is real or just Apple tax on metal.

- Over-ear wins on ANC physics, not driver magic
The $250 is mostly paying for two checkable things. First, over-ears have bigger earcups, which means passive isolation stacks with ANC — measured ANC on over-ears typically runs 10-15 dB deeper than earbuds in the low rumble band where train noise lives. Second, the Max 2 has a bigger battery and drivers that do not have to fit in your ear canal. If you listen on the train, the ANC difference is the part you will actually notice daily. Sound quality on Spotify streams: marginal. Buy the Max 2 for the quiet, not the drivers.
