Sony's new 1000X "The Collexion" is $649 — who is this actually for when the XM5 keeps going on sale?
Sony just announced the 1000X The Collexion at $649, and I am trying to figure out the positioning. The XM5 is the established flagship and routinely sells for hundreds less during sale events; there is also a healthy used market. So at $649, is The Collexion supposed to be a genuine step up in audio quality, a design or limited piece, or just a brand premium? If anyone has compared the specs or heard it: is there a checkable reason to pay roughly 2x over a discounted XM5, or is this for collectors? Genuinely trying to understand the value equation here.

- $649 for headphones is a no unless you fly every week
No. $649 for wireless headphones is absurd money unless you are on a plane three days a week, and even then the difference between a discounted flagship and these is marginal. Buy the older flagship on sale, spend the $350 you saved on literally anything else. Audio gear past $300 is diminishing returns city. And Sony always discounts — wait six months and The Collexion will be $450 anyway, that is how their launches work.
