AI automation freelancing on Upwork — is client demand real, or just course sellers selling to each other?
Okay so every other ad on my feed is someone selling an 'AI agency in a weekend' course, which makes me suspicious the whole niche is just gurus selling shovels to each other lol. But I also see actual AI automation gigs on Upwork — n8n, Make, Zapier stuff. I'm technical-ish and learning this stack anyway. Question for people who've done it: are real businesses actually hiring freelancers for this? And what are the boring, real tasks they pay for? Not asking for a course pitch — asking whether the work itself exists.

The demand exists. It's not what the course guys sell. Real gigs I've seen: syncing a Shopify store to a CRM. Auto-generating invoices from emails. Scraping supplier price lists into a spreadsheet. Nobody's paying a freelancer to 'build them an AI agency.' They're paying $500–$2,000 to stop doing copy-paste work. So yes, real businesses hire for this. But the money is in boring plumbing, not sexy AI demos. If you can stomach unglamorous automation, the work is there.
