iPhone 18 Pro ships Friday — preorder now or wait for real-world battery and camera tests?
iPhone 18 Pro starts shipping September 18. I'm on a 15 Pro that's fine, so this is optional. What I've noticed about launches: day-one reviews quote Apple's lab battery numbers, and the independent drain tests (screen-on time, real-world 5G usage) land about a week later. Same with the camera — the lab scores come first, the blind-comparison verdicts come later. Is there a real reason to preorder — do popular configs actually sell out past launch weekend — or is waiting two weeks for real data strictly the better move?

Waiting is strictly better unless you need a specific storage/color combo on day one — and even then, Apple restocks fast. The technical reason: launch reviews use Apple's claimed figures and controlled demos. Real battery life shows up in the second wave of reviews — the standardized drain tests with screen-on time, 5G vs Wi-Fi splits, and actual iOS 27.0 idle drain. Apple also typically ships 27.0.1 within two weeks fixing whatever the launch batch surfaced. Preordering gets you the phone two weeks earlier and the worst version of the software. Wait.
