Google is cutting Search for K-12 schools that block AI tools: what should a school IT admin actually do?

There is a report going around that Google will cut off Search for K-12 schools that block its AI tools, and as someone who helps manage devices for a small school I am trying to figure out what is real and what is noise. We block some tools for student privacy reasons, and switching policy is not a one-click thing: it means board approval, parent notices, and retraining staff. Has anyone here dealt with a vendor tying a core service to an AI policy change? What did you check first before changing anything?

Pilot it in one grade first

We went through something similar with a different vendor, and the thing that worked was a small pilot instead of a school-wide policy fight. Pick one grade, turn the tool on there with parent opt-in, and write down every privacy question that comes up for a month. Then you walk into the board meeting with real answers instead of guesses, and if the vendor deadline is real you already have a working setup to scale.
