Microsoft reported fiscal Q1 2027 earnings after the bell tonight: $4.89 per share against a $4.72 consensus, revenue $92.28 billion against $90.62 billion expected, and Azure growth accelerating to 48 percent, above its own guide. The stock jumped about 4 to 5 percent after hours, after closing down slightly at $531. At the same time Microsoft is offering a voluntary exit plan that about 60,000 employees are eligible for, as it ramps up data center spending. Does a beat like this quiet the worry that AI spending will never pay off, or is one strong quarter just not enough evidence yet?

Azure at 48 percent is the only number that matters

Azure at 48 percent is the only number that matters here. EPS and revenue beats are nice, but Azure accelerating past its own 44 to 45 percent guide is what answers the spending question, because it shows the data center buildout is converting into billed cloud growth. The 60,000-person voluntary exit plan is the other side of the same coin: Microsoft is funding that buildout by shrinking headcount. Watch next quarter Azure guide, not the headline EPS.
