Car battery is 4 years old and cranks slow on cold mornings — test it or just replace?
Four-year-old battery, slow cranks now that it is getting cold. The auto parts store does a free load test, Costco has the same group size for $30 less but the warranty line there is always insane. Just test it and squeeze another winter out, or replace now before it strands me in a parking lot in January? Anyone had a 4-year battery test fine and then die mid-winter anyway?

- Costco warranty math wins.
Ran the numbers on this last winter: Costco battery was $115 vs $145 at the chain store, and Costco replacement warranty is 36 months full replacement vs 24 pro-rated at most auto stores. Even if the free test says your battery has one winter left, a new battery at $115 with a 3-year warranty beats a January jump-start plus a full-price emergency buy. Buy in October, not January.
- Free load test first.
Get the free load test before you spend anything. A 4-year-old battery that cranks slow in cold weather is usually at 50 to 60 percent capacity — the tester prints the CCA reading, and if it is under 70 percent of the rated CCA, replace it. Cold-cranking amps is the number that matters for winter, not the brand. Takes 5 minutes and tells you exactly where you stand.
