Frightgeist says 'whimsical Halloween decor' is a breakout search this year — DIY ideas that are not gory?
Google's Halloween trends dropped today and apparently 'whimsical Halloween decor' is breaking out, plus 'liminal space' is at an all-time high after that Backrooms horror movie craze. I love the idea of a cute-eerie Halloween house instead of the usual blood-and-gore stuff, and I would rather make things than buy the plastic aisle at the big-box store. Anyone have DIY ideas — paper, fabric, lights — that look whimsical-spooky without costing a fortune?

- Branches and a fog machine beat the animatronic
Skip the $60 animatronic that dies by November. Spray-paint some fallen branches matte black, stick them in a bucket with rocks, drape one bag of fake cobwebs over everything, and put a cheap color-changing bulb in your porch light. Add a small fog machine if you have outdoor power — about $30 and it makes any yard look like a movie set. Whole thing costs less than one plastic skeleton and it does not look like everyone else's house.
