Boss's Day is Oct 16 — what's a good gift under $25 that doesn't scream suck-up?

I'm eight months into a new job and I genuinely like my boss. The team usually does a group card, but I want to do one small thing of my own. Hard cap: $25. My constraints: nothing monogrammed, nothing that implies a hobby they don't have, nothing that'll sit on their desk for three years as a reminder. I considered nice coffee beans from a local roaster plus a handwritten card, or making something small by hand. What reads as thoughtful-but-appropriate at this budget, and what should I absolutely avoid?

Workplace gift surveys consistently rank consumables highest: good coffee, nice chocolate, quality tea. Edible, finite, no shelf obligation. A $25 physical object reads either cheap or try-hard, and it sits there getting judged. My formula: local roaster bag ($14-18) plus a specific thank-you card ($0) — thoughtful, finite, and it can't be regifted back to you at the holiday party. Avoid: mugs (everyone owns twelve), anything with 'BOSS' printed on it, and gift cards under $25, which read transactional. Skip the handmade unless you know they genuinely appreciate handmade — forced craft can read as over-invested.
