Toy recalls are up this year — how do I actually check what we already bought?
Three kids, a closet full of toys bought at discount stores and holiday sales. Now product-recall searches are spiking 1,000% and toy recalls specifically are climbing. I'm not panic-buying replacements for everything — but how do you actually check what you already own? Is there a free, official way to search by brand, or do you just wait for the news to scare you? And are those retailer "recall email" signups actually reliable, or marketing lists wearing a safety costume?

- Recalls.gov email alerts by category
Skip the retailer lists — those are marketing emails with a recall section bolted on. Go to recalls.gov, sign up for email alerts by product category, and you get the official notice the day it posts, before the news cycle picks it up. It's free, it's the actual CPSC source, and you can set it to just toys if you don't want the noise. Then when a recall hits, search the model number on the toy's underside — that's the checkable part the panic headlines skip.
