Ads keep pushing 'AI mini PCs' — legit home-server hardware or just a sticker on the same box?
Searches for AI mini PC are up something like 8,100% and my feed is full of them. I want a small box to run Jellyfin and Home Assistant, and these 'AI' mini PCs cost about the same as the regular N100/Ryzen ones. Does the NPU in these things do anything useful for self-hosting, or is 'AI' just the 2026 version of 'gaming' slapped on the same hardware? What should I actually check before buying — chip, RAM, thermals?

- Buy the chip, not the sticker
I run a home server on a plain N100 box and the 'AI' label adds exactly nothing to it. The NPUs in these mini PCs are for Windows background-blur and local Copilot tricks, not for Jellyfin transcoding or Home Assistant. What matters: actual CPU (N100 vs Ryzen 7 8845HS is a real gap), dual 2.5Gb NICs if you care about network, and whether the thing thermal-throttles in a closet. Ignore the badge, read the spec sheet.
