October means the seasonal swap in my 450 sq ft apartment and every year the winter clothes win the closet war. Right now it's coats draped over the reading chair and boots colonizing the entryway. For people in small apartments: what system actually works? Vacuum bags under the bed? Stackable bins in the closet? Some kind of rotation schedule? I don't mind spending a weekend setting something up if it actually holds through March. What's the one upgrade that made the biggest difference for you?

Vacuum bags + a fixed rotation date

Engineered this for a 380 sq ft studio, so here's the spec that works. Vacuum-seal bags compress bulky knits to roughly 1/3 of their volume — measure your under-bed clearance first (most need 6+ inches) and get bags that fit flat, not the cube ones. Divide winter clothes into two tiers: Tier 1 (daily drivers, ~10 items: one heavy coat, two sweaters, boots) stays accessible; Tier 2 (ski gear, formal coat, duplicates) gets vacuum-sealed and labeled by category with painter's tape. The biggest upgrade was a single stackable bin per category instead of one giant trunk — retrieval time drops to near zero because you never dig. Rotate the swap on a fixed date (first weekend of October/April) so it becomes maintenance, not a project.
