'AI Mini PC' searches are up 8,100% — does the AI part actually do anything or is it just a sticker on the box?

Trends data this month shows 'AI Mini PC' searches up 8,100%, right next to AI air fryers and AI mice. I'm shopping mini PCs (Beelink/GMKtec class) and every listing suddenly has AI in the name. Is there a real NPU in these doing anything useful, or is it the same hardware with new marketing? What should I actually check on the spec sheet?

I went down this hole last month. Some of these do have a real NPU (look for a specific model like the Ryzen AI chips with a stated TOPS number); most just renamed the same box. The checkable test: if the listing won't name the NPU or its TOPS, it's a sticker. Ask the seller for the exact chip model before you buy anything.
