Scientists just named a new cat species (the tilcayo) — is that just cool news or does it matter?

Saw the news: tiny spotted cat from Bolivia's cloud forests, Leopardus tilcayo, first new wildcat scientifically described in like 100 years (paper in Current Biology), and locals apparently called it tilcayo all along. As a cat person I'm curious — is this just a fun science story, or does splitting tiger cats into five distinct species actually change anything for conservation? (And no, sadly not a new breed you can adopt.)
