Matcha vs coffee for mornings — is the 'calm energy' thing real or just hype?
I've been a two-coffees-before-10am person forever and I get jittery, then I crash by 2pm. Every matcha person swears it's 'calm alertness' because of L-theanine, and 'matcha vs coffee' is literally breaking out on Google Trends right now. I tried matcha once at a cafe and it tasted like lawn clippings lol. Is there something real to the caffeine-feels-different claim, or is it just marketing? If I give it a real shot, what should I actually order or buy?

- Coffee wins on cost
Coffee wins and it's not close on cost. Decent beans run ~$15/lb for ~30 cups = $0.50/cup. Ceremonial matcha is $25-30 for 20 servings = $1.25+/cup. Checkable: do the per-serving math on whatever brands you're comparing — matcha is 2-3x the price per cup before you buy any gear. If the 'calm energy' matters, try L-theanine capsules ($10 for months) with your coffee.
- Homemade matcha latte with oat milk
Okay I was team coffee forever and the switch surprised me lol. The trick is making it at home — ceremonial matcha plus oat milk plus a cheap whisk comes out to about a dollar a cup vs $6+ at a cafe, so you can actually afford to experiment. And you control the caffeine: half a teaspoon if you want gentle, full teaspoon if you need the kick. The 'calm energy' thing is real for me — no 11am crash like my cold brew days. Give it two weeks before you judge, your taste buds need to adjust from coffee bitterness!
