> Halloween is next Saturday and I have done zero decorating. My porch is bare, my budget is tight, and every big-box display pushes the giant inflatables that cost $150 to $200 and need a blower running all night. I want something that looks intentional from the sidewalk, not a sad single pumpkin. I have string lights already and I can cut, paint, and glue. What is the one setup you would do for under $40: lights plus homemade silhouettes, a fog machine, painted jars, something else? What actually reads well from the street after dark, and what is a waste of money?

> Orange lights and cardboard silhouettes, skip the inflatable

> Do not buy the inflatable. It eats your whole budget, needs power all night, and looks deflated by morning if the blower hiccups. What actually reads from the street is contrast: warm orange string lights along the porch rail plus black cardboard silhouettes taped inside the windows with a lamp behind them. Cardboard is nearly free, the lights you already own, and the silhouette effect looks deliberate instead of store-bought. Add one real carved pumpkin by the door and you are done for under $20. Fog machines look great for ten minutes and then the wind takes it.
