> ‘Margin calls’ is suddenly everywhere — up 23% year over year with about 135,000 monthly searches — and it made me realize I don’t actually know the mechanics. My broker enabled margin on my account when I signed up and I’ve never touched it. Say the market dips 20% on a Tuesday: who calls whom, how much time do I get to wire cash, and what triggers the broker selling my positions for me? I’d rather learn this on a calm Saturday than during a red week.

> Switch the account to cash-only

> I did exactly this in 2023 after one margin scare. Ten minutes in the broker settings, done. Margin turns a normal 20% dip into a forced sale at the worst possible minute — the broker can liquidate your positions without asking, usually same day. If you cannot explain how your broker calculates maintenance margin off the top of your head, you should not be using it. Cash account, problem gone.
