> My partner and I have a Hawaii trip booked for next week — flights and a hotel on the Big Island, with a nonrefundable hotel deposit. Then Hurricane Nolo shows up: Category 4, 155 mph winds, and the forecast is talking about up to 35 inches of rain on the east side of the Big Island this week. The center is supposed to stay southwest of the islands, but that much rain sounds miserable. Do we cancel and eat the deposit, try to reroute to Oahu or another island, or just go and hope it weakens? What would you actually do?

Oahu mostly gets wind and swells instead. Check whether your airline issued a travel waiver; once a storm is named this close, they usually do, and that turns a nonrefundable change fee into a free reroute. Cancel outright only if the hotel deposit is smaller than the cost of a rained-out week on the east side. And buy travel insurance for the next one — it is too late for this trip, since the named storm was already known when you would be buying.
